HUGE Studio Sale

I'm so excited to host my first ever open house Studio Sale! And a little nervous. This will be the first time I not only get to welcome you all into my home, but also get to see all my different series of works together side-by-side.

I'm doing this for a couple important reasons. Next spring my husband and I are embarking on a year-long creative documentary adventure, The Painted Road Project. Our deal was this: He will take care of buying the truck and camper, and I will take care of our living expenses and clearing out the house. This Studio Sale will help give me a boost towards tackling both overwhelming tasks at once. I have a lot of paintings in storage that are just collecting dust and taking up space. It's such a shame too, because so many of them are beautiful and in need of a permanent home.

This is win-win for all of us! I can fundraise and you can decorate your home while saving up to 50% off investing in my artwork.
I roughly counted over 45 original oil paintings (only a few of them shown below), over 100 prints (both framed and unframed), over 20 reproductions on canvas, and over 40 reproductions on wood blocks. Like I said, I have a lot of art!

I've posted some originals here that can be purchased early-bird style through PayPal by credit card or through your PayPal account (an account is not required for processing). Email me at daina@oceanartstudio.ca with subject "Studio Sale" and let me know the following...
1. your full name and mailing address for the PayPal Invoice
2. whether or not you need the artwork shipped
3. if you want to pick it up from me at the Halifax Seaport Market, or
4. if you will pick it up from me at my Studio Sale

Otherwise, if you're feeling lucky, wait until my open house and come prepared with cash. My wireless Interac machine has no reception at my house.

Email me for Directions and to receive your official Studio Sale Invitation.
RSVP and share my Facebook Event with friends.

Family Summer in Nova Scotia

Summertime in Nova Scotia is incredible. If you live here, or have visited, you know what I mean. The air is clean and delicious, the water is refreshing, and the sun often shines. Every August my brother and sister in-law and my three nieces escape the sweltering heat of Toronto for a week home with us...

We enjoyed laying out and playing on Clam Harbour Beach during the Sandcastle Contest while the kids and their dad had their own hand-stand contest.

Ellie, my scary little 7-year old sand monster...

Another beautiful beach day was spent at Stoney Beach in Lawrencetown. Above, my husband walks the low tide pools with my nieces Ellie and Jordyn. Below, Ellie does a perfect hand stand!

Jordyn gets the deluxe full body Beach Spa treatment...

Balance beams and hula hoops...

My sister-in-law, Barb, and my youngest niece, Brooklyn...

My husband gives Brook a plane ride!

My brother-in-law Mike couldn't stop saying how happy he was, after 2 hrs kiting at Stoney's. Lake Ontario gets some wind, but nothing beats the real thing on the ocean!

My folks come for a visit this week!! I look forward to lots of day trips exploring the coast, beach-combing, and a road trip around the Cabot Trail.

Enjoy these last few weeks of summer... xo DS

New Encaustic Workshops

Something I've been wanting to do for a long time now is offer encaustic painting workshops (with beeswax and pigment) to individuals and small groups of 2-3 at my home studio in Lawrencetown. The interest over the past couple years has really been building, with many people asking me about lessons every weekend at the Halifax Seaport Market. I am thrilled to share that I have finally open for workshops!
No prior painting or creative experience is necessary. You just need 2 hands, a sense of humour, and a willingness to try something new. Oh, and not have dog allergies (I have a 19-year old girl who has long since given up kissing strangers, I promise).

Workshops will run from 10am-4pm, and include a delicious homemade (gluten-free and vegan optional) lunch and refreshments, even wine, espresso or cappuccino for a little indulgence.

Cost is $120 per person + $30 for materials. You'll each have fun making 1-3 finished pieces for your home or for gifting. Feel free to bring extra materials to collage with if you like (such as photos, fabrics, shells, small found objects, mementos, etc.), as well as a smock or apron. For each group Workshop to be confirmed, I'll need at least 2 people booked for that date and paid in full.

Or if you prefer some 1 on 1 time, I'm offering a 4-5hr private lesson from either 10am-2pm or 12pm-4pm on the date of your choice (excluding weekends) is $195 all-inclusive.

Payments can be made easily online through a bank Interac e-transfer or a PayPal money transfer, or by cash or cheque in person at the workshop.

To book a workshop, please email me with your 1st and 2nd choice of dates, and I'll reach out to gather more people to fill a date. Or if you'd like to book a small private party of 3 on a specific date, I'm open to that, too.

Feel free to share this post with friends, or contact me to organize your own little group party.

There are many possibilities to choose from for creating an encaustic artwork. One option is painting filtered beeswax over either a photograph of your choice, or a giclee reproduction on fine art paper as I have done here...

The wax has been painted on at about 200-225C. Now it's ready for the heat gun which will melt the wax and fuse it together for a finished look.

Finished! This piece is Indian Summer in Lawrencetown, 8"x8" for $95. Available in my Etsy Shop.

Check out some of my encaustic artworks for sale online in my Etsy Ocean Art Studio Shop here
The following images are of some other encaustic paintings I've done using mixed media (shells, sand, scrapbooking paper), pigmented wax, and oil pastels. Other mixed media ideas include fabric, photographs, string, small found objects, mementos, magazine cut-outs, etc...

Living on the Edge... of the Sea

Every year Visual Arts Nova Scotia (VANS) members are divided by districts where the artists' works are celebrated with exhibitions. Our eastern shore region was showcased at Memory Lane Heritage Village, a beautiful, rustic gallery space in Lake Charlotte, just before Clam Harbour.

The show is open and runs through until September 3rd, so when you go to the famous annual Clam Harbour Sandcastle Contest this Sunday, be sure to stop by the show. It's the first building on your right after you turn right onto Clam Harbour Road. Check out their Facebook Page for more info and to see last year's photos.

Many of my favourite artists are exhibiting all under one roof, including Eva and Judith Brannen and Tonya MacPhail! Eva's paintings give me goosebumps every time I glimpse into her spirit forests, while Judith's work has deep organic roots in earth and spirit that will expand your awareness of the natural world just by being in her creative presence. This mother-daughter pair are easily inspired by each other and it's a beautiful thing to experience! Visit Judith's gallery at The MacDonald House in Lawrencetown next time you come to the beach. Tonya MacPhail's paintings are a must see in person. Bring your magnifying glass! I cannot get close enough to this girl's work, it is so detailed and whimsical, my words just don't do her art justice. Even her frames are a work of art! Visit her Facebook Page to see more, and if you're in Newfoundland, look out for her little Crooked House paintings that she and her sister Shannon are famous for creating together! There are so many other great artists at this show, you'll have to come visit before it's sold out...

My painted surfboard (shaped by Alex Hanssen) on top, and Summer Sessions bottom left.

Three sold on this little wall during the opening reception night! Judith Brannen's painting on top, Tonya MacPhail's painting in centre, and my Cow Bay painting far left. Pretty good, I'd say! There were many more sold paintings...

The painting at the top of the white doors was one of my favourites. I wish I wrote down the artist's name.

My 6' painted surfboard (shaped by Alex Hanssen, pintail, red cedar) on top, and Summer Sessions bottom left.
For sale $900! As seen on display in Lululemon Athletica's Halifax storefront window through summer of 2011.

Summer Sessions, Lawrencetown. Original oil painting by Daina Scarola, 14"x18" $390.

Cow Bay, original oil painting by Daina Scarola, 11"x14" SOLD!
